This invention relates to control systems for mobile telephones (1), effective in environments (5, 6, 7), such as those accommodating musical or sporting events, where their usage is intrusive, or otherwise antisocial, and/or in environments such as in courts of law and on aircraft, in which the use of mobile telephones does not constitute merely an annoyance, but may be illegal and/or present a danger to others. It provides a system, for automatically controlling the usage of mobile telephones (1) in such circumstances, capable of detecting when a mobile telephone (1) is in a sensitive environment (5, 6, 7) and controlling the functionality of the mobile telephone (1) whilst the telephone remains in said environment, thereby inhibiting the user or operation of the mobile telephone (1) in a manner inconsistent with requirements and/or rules applicable to the environment.
