Method of controlling the combustion process in an internal combustion engine and an engine with means for controlling the engine valves

Four-stroke internal combustion engine with electrically operated inlet and exhaust valves (9, 11) and with means for supplying a homogeneous fuel/air mixture to the engine cylinders. The engine has an ignition system (14) with a sparkplug (2) for each cylinder (1). A control unit (15) controls the valves and the ignition system in such a manner that the engine, within a lower rpm range with the ignition system deactivated, operates with compression ignition. At transition from the lower to a higher rpm range, the control unit activates the ignition system and adjusts the exhaust gas valves (11) towards later closing, this adjustment being effected from one work cycle to the next. <IMAGE>
