Process for preparing allenyl beta-lactam derivatives

An allenyl beta -lactam compound of structure (4) is prepared by reacting the hydroxyl group of a starting beta -lactam compound of structure (1) with a reactive functional group derivative of sulfonic acid and reacting the resulting beta -lactam compound of structure (3) with a tertiary organic base to obtain the allenyl beta -lactam compound, thereafter causing two kinds of ion exchange resins, i.e., an acidic cation exchange resin and a basic anion exchange resin, to alternately or simultaneously act on the allenyl beta -lactam compound and isolating the allenyl beta -lactam compound from the resulting reaction solution. <CHEM>
