A sensor and system for monitoring one or more environments and a method and computer software means for carrying out same. A measurement of a parameter in an environment such as a chemical substance is made by a sensor means. A signal containing information from the sensor means is communicated via a telephone and a communication network to a remote reference database for evaluation by comparison. On comparison with information stored remotely the parameter measurement value is identified and quantified. Thus for a chemical substance, the substance is identified and a concentration at the sensor means established. The preferred communication device is a mobile phone and the remote reference database is reached via network such as the Internet.
