An automobile driveline comprises a driveshaft, a driveshaft flange 28, an axle flange 16, a pinion nut 26 and a differential pinion shaft 14 connected to transmit torque. To provide a dynamically balanced assembly, each component has a notional cylinder defined by a balance radius from its centreline 32 within which its centre of mass must be located to provide a balance tolerance. If the centre of mass falls outside the cylinder the component is balanced by machining or drilling. The balance radius for each component is set to provide an overall balance radius for the assembled driveline. The overall radius is minimised to 'optimise' the imbalance according to cost, component materials, customer sensitivity to out of balance noise and vehicle or driveline design. |
