PURPOSE: A method for data compression, transfer and reproduction is provided to decrease time for download and economize in the capacity of a memory by reducing the volume of music performance data. CONSTITUTION: Music-performance data is divided into note-number data, musical note-velocity data, musical note-length data and other data. A primary code is formed in which the note-number data, the musical note-velocity data, the musical note-length data and the other necessary data are arranged in different data fields. The primary code and a player(106) are compressed, the playback player being formed in software having a primary code decoding function to decode the primary code into the data arranged in the different data fields for reproducing the music-performance data, thus forming a first secondary code for the primary code and a second secondary code for the playback player. The first secondary code is decoded into the primary code of the music-performance data. The second secondary code is decoded into the playback player. The primary code is decoded by the playback player, thus reproducing the music-performance data.
