The invention relates to a method and a device for producing a treatment gas containing CO and H2, for the thermal treatment of a metallic material at high temperatures. According to said method, the treatment gas is formed by the catalytic conversion of a hydrocarbon gas (mixture) with a gas mixture containing oxygen and nitrogen, whereby the catalytic conversion takes place in one or more catalytic retorts. According to a first embodiment of the invention, the gas mixture (1, 2) containing oxygen and nitrogen is first heated (E), is subsequently mixed with the hydrocarbon gas mixture (4) and is fed to the catalytic retort(s) (K). According to a second embodiment of the invention, the gas mixture containing oxygen and nitrogen is first mixed with the hydrocarbon gas mixture, is subsequently heated and is supplied to the catalytic retort(s). The invention permits the quantity of treatment gas, the carbon monoxide content of said treatment gas and the CO/CO2 ratio etc. to be varied within a comparatively wide range. |
