A process for preparing compounds having partial skeletons of the general formula [2] (wherein A is oxygen, sulfur, optionally substituted methylene, or optionally substituted imino), characterized by subjecting a slightly water-soluble substance having a partial skeleton of the general formula [1] (wherein A is as defined above; and X is halogeno) to intramolecular radical cyclization in an aqueous medium in the presence of a surfactant by the use of an azo polymerization initiator soluble in the aqueous medium. This process permits intramolecular radical cyclization of a slightly water-soluble substance in an aqueous medium and is therefore free from the harmful influence of an organic solvent on the human body, the environment, and so on. |
