PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for transmitting packet data of a mobile communication system is provided to improve the transmission throughput of the packet data by determining a length and a structure of a transmission packet so that one code word symbol(sub-code word symbol) is transmitted to one physical channel transmission frame. CONSTITUTION: A code selecting unit(102) responds to the input of a PLP(Physical Layer Packet) information bit series and generates a plurality of sub-codes at same or different code rates. A control unit(100) determines a minimum code rate so that the number of modulation symbol corresponding to corresponding sub-codes determined in time intervals in which the PLP information bit series is assigned is same to or more than the number of modulation symbols capable of being transmitted in each time interval. A symbol pruner(105) prunes symbols of the corresponding sub-codes so that the number of the modulation symbols corresponding to the number of symbols of the corresponding sub-codes is identical to the number of the modulation symbols capable of transmission when the number of the modulation symbols is more that the number of the modulation symbols capable of transmission.
