A coin sorter where the pattern on a coin slotted through a coin slotting part (2) is recognized by a sensor part (3). The time during which the pattern is examined is measured by time measuring means (11). The measured time is compared with a judgment value stored in judgment value storage means (16) so as to check whether the coin is genuine.
