PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and high-luminance picture projecting device excellent in the uniformity of display by improving the contrast and the display irregularity in such a reflection type picture projecting device that incident angle on a polarizing beam splitter is large. SOLUTION: A reflection type polarized light modulation element 41 is illuminated with light outgoing from a light source 10 by an integrator optical system constituted of a pair of fly-eye lenses 21 and 22. A polarizing beam splitter 30 is arranged so that the transmitted p-polarized light of the light from the light source 10 is made incident on the element 41 and returned s-polarized light from the element 41 is guided as the reflected light to a projection lens 60. A 1/4 wavelength plate 81 is arranged between the splitter 30 and the element 41. The plate 81 is arranged in a state where a phase lagging axis or a phase advancing axis is orthogonal to a plane including the normal of the splitter 30 and an emitted optical axis.
