A dihydropyrimidine derivative or a salt thereof has the formula (I) or its isomeric form (Ia) wherein: R1 is optionally substituted phenyl, furyl, thienyl, pyridyl, cycloalkyl or a group of formula (2); R2 is -XR12 or -NR13R14; X is a bond or oxygen; R12, R13 and R14 are as defined in the specification; R3 is H, amino, -CH(OCH3)2, formyl, cyano, trifluoromethyl, pyridyl, an optionally substituted straight chained, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon or optionally substituted phenyl or together R2 and R3 form a radical -O-CH2-; R4 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, benzoyl or acyl; R5 is pyridyl substituted up to 3 times independently by halo, hydroxy, cyano, trifluoromethyl, alkoxy, alkyl, alkylthio, carbalkoxy, acyloxy, amino, nitro, or alkylamino or dialkylamino. A pharmaceutical composition thereof its useful for treating acute or chronic viral diseases.
