PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device capable of effectively utilizing illumination luminous flux and projection luminous flux. SOLUTION: This device is provided with an illumination optical system 1, a DMD element 2, a lens element 3 and a projection optical system 4, and satisfies T>=(H/2).cosα+(ϕLa/2+T1).cosαand Lp/fp<=7 when it is assumed that an angle formed by an illumination optical axis 1a with a projection optical axis 4a isα, a distance from the center of the lens element 3 to the center of the aperture part 4b on a light incident side of the optical system 4 is Lp, a distance from the center of the aperture part 4b on the light incident side of the optical system 4 to the optical axis 1a is T, the diagonal dimension of the element 2 is H, the diameter of the aperture part 4b on the light incident side of the optical system 4 isϕLa, 1/2 of a value obtained by subtracting the diameter of the aperture part 4b on the light incident side of the optical system 4 from the maximum outside diameter of the lens barrel 16 of the optical system 4 is T1 and the focal distance of the optical system 4 is fp.
