A girth monitor comprises of a decorative yet sturdy light chain (200) of occasionally adjustable length, worn continuously about a person's waist, where it serves to indicate changes in girth circumference through perceived changes in pressure or looseness. Usually the initial length is set to be a loose yet perceptible fit and the monitor will tighten noticeable as soon as the wearer puts on weight, so that it can quietly warn the wearer of for example over-indulgence in food during a meal. A preferred material is a chain (200) made of soldered silver wire links (202 and 203). Visual attractiveness is considered important so that the girth monitor remains in use for an extended period. The chain (200) is held in place by a catch (201) engaging with a selected link (204). On an occasion when the position of the catch (201) may be advanced, the wearer can celebrate a loss in weight. Thus operant conditioning of the wearer is in continuous effect and is supplemented whenever a milestone is reached.
