PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem where, with a conventional fax, reading is performed at a resolution selected by an operator, which is accumulated in a memory, however, the resolution is converted, for transmission, if the resolution of a called-party device is lower than that. SOLUTION: Whether an image memory 9 is extended or not is a base for judging whether to accumulate in the image memory 9 as multiple values or as binary. It is accumulated as multiple values when an extension image memory 10 is attached while accumulated as binary when it is not attached. A multi- valued data outputted from a scanner 2 is normally binarized and then compressed to be stored in the image memory 9, for transmission after conversion of the binarized data. The multi-valued data outputted from the scanner 2 is compressed and stored in the image memory 9 only when the image memory 10 is extended, for transmission as binary after the multi-valued data is converted. It is accumulated as multiple values only when the image memory is extended, so an image quality does not degrade even if a resolution is converted during memory transmission. As it is not accumulated as multiple values when the image memory is not extended, a memory capacity is less plausible to run out.
