PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly start the changing or relaxing of the alignment of liquid crystal to reduce the response time of the transmittance of light when a dimming liquid crystal device is driven in a halftone and to improve the performance, image quality and reliability of a dimmer device and photographing device. SOLUTION: The dimmer device is equipped with a liquid crystal element 12, a detecting part 65 to detect the environmental temperature of the liquid crystal device, and a pulse controlling part 62 to preliminarily insert a controlling driving pulse corresponding to the minimum transmittance or the maximum transmittance of light before the driving pulse corresponding to the aimed transmittance is given when the transmittance of light emitting from the liquid crystal is changed from the current value to the aimed transmittance on the basis of the detected value by the detecting part. In the method for driving the dimmer device, the device is driven by using the above controlling driving pulse. The dimmer device is disposed in the optical path of the image pickup system of the image pickup device.
