The car seat whose position can be adjusted has a locking mechanism for its floor mountings and a back which can be folded down on to the seat. A catch (51) fixes the back in either of its positions and the release (43) for the floor mountings is connected by a system of levers (6) to the catch and locks the catch when the back is down and the floor mountings are unlocked. A stop (56) on the catch prevents the levers from moving except when the back is down and the floor mountings are unlocked.
