PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of extending an optical switch which allows reduction in optical loss, and also provide an optical switch and optical cross- connector using this method. SOLUTION: The optical switch is made by arranging a plurality of 2-input 2-output optical switch elements into a matrix and comprises first to fourth optical matrix switches (optical MSW) 11-1 to 11-4 which form a plurality of input ports, standby input ports, output ports, and standby output ports. The standby output ports of the first optical MSW 11-1 are connected to the input ports of the third optical MSW 11-3 respectively, the output ports of the second optical MSW 11-2 are connected to the standby input ports of the third optical MSW 11-3 respectively, the output ports of the first optical MSW 11-1 are connected to the standby input ports of the fourth MSW 11-4 respectively, and the standby output ports of the second optical MSW 11-2 are connected to the input ports of the fourth optical MSW 11-4, respectively. |
