PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magneto-optical recording medium having two magnetic masks of a high temperature part and a low temperature part in the reproducing light spot and capable of realizing high-density recording and reproduction in a low reproducing magnetic field. SOLUTION: The magneto-optical recording medium has a recording layer and a reproducing layer. The reproducing layer is provided with such characteristics that the layer shows perpendicular magnetization at low temperature and shows in-plane magnetization at high temperature, so that a magnetic mask is formed in the high temperature part in the reproducing light spot, and the layer is provided with characteristics that the recording layer has small Ms and the coercive force in the reproducing layer increases at a low temperature, so that a magnetic mask is formed in the low temperature part in the reproducing light spot. Since the aperture size contributing to reproduction can be reduced, the reproduction resolution can be improved with a low reproducing magnetic field.
