PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus, for the inspection of a defect, wherein the existence of the defect in even a weld in a nuclear reactor can be detected surely and the shape or the size of the defect can be found. SOLUTION: The defect inspection apparatus is provided with a magnetic-line- of-force generation part 11 used to magnetize the weld 2 in which an iron and steel base material 1 and an iron and steel base material 2 are welded, a leakage magnetic-line-of-force detection member 20 which detects a leakage magnetic line of force leaked to the outside from the surface of the weld 2 and a neural network 33 which analyzes the detection signal of the detection member 20 and which finds the existence of the defect in the weld 2 and the shape or the size of the defect.
