PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a lithium battery capable of exhibiting an excellent cycle characteristic while maintaining high service capacity. SOLUTION: This negative electrode material for a lithium battery is made of a composite powder containing a first substance liable to form a compound with lithium and a second substance less liable to form a compound with lithium. The first substance is a compound containing one or more of tin, silicon, aluminum, and silver. The second substance comprises a compound containing one or more of copper, nickel, and cobalt.
