PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make liquid crystalline molecules hybrid align, in a state with an easily controllable tilt angle. SOLUTION: In an optically anisotropic element provided with a liquid crystal layer, made of the liquid crystalline molecules, an alignment layer and a transparent supporting body arranged on the one side of the surface of the liquid crystal layer and a free boundary surface with no alignment layer on the other side of the surface of the liquid crystal layer, the liquid crystalline molecules contained in the liquid crystal layer are aligned, in such a way that the tilt angle is larger on the surface with the arranged alignment layer than that on the free boundary surface and the tilt angle varies corresponding to the distance between the liquid crystalline molecule and the alignment layer. |
