PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element obtaining desired display characteristics by making liquid crystal layer thickness in a display area appropriate, at the same time, causing no lowering of the display quality due to fluxion of the liquid crystal by making substrates hardly distorted with bending even when a pressing force is added from the outside and further being manufactured with few steps and at a low cost. SOLUTION: Spacers for a sealing part 17, to control a distance between the substrates at the sealing part made of a sealing material to be shorter than a distance between the substrates in the display area controlled by spacers in the display area 15, are dispersed and mixed in the frame-shaped sealing material 16. A pair of the substrates 1, 2 are respectively joined with the sealing material 16 in a state in which the spacers in the display area 15 and the spacers for the sealing part 17 are held between the substrates 1, 2 and the substrates are distorted and bent in a direction of making the distance between the substrates in the region corresponding to the sealing part shorter than that in the region corresponding to the display area.
