PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader having excellent user-friendliness that detects a direction of an original so as to correct the direction even without an index denoting the direction in the original and without the need for adding the index denoting the direction of the original to the original. SOLUTION: The image reader applies binary processing to image data after an image of an original is read, applies character recognition processing to a high-order part of a 1st page, extracts the direction of recognized characters, applies direction correction rotation processing to the characters able to be recognized altogether, applies direction correction rotation processing to the 1st page at that point of time, and applies the same direction correction rotation processing to 2nd page and succeeding pages when the application of the direction correction rotation processing of the 1st page is finished.
