A composition comprises a bulk forming component, a cholesterol reducing component and a fatty acid wherein one of these component is a starch, the presence of the starch countering any expected deleterious effects of bulk formation or fatty acid depletion, such that the level of butyric acid in the colon of the subject consuming the composition is maintained above expected levels.
