A protector member (60) for the exterior of a protective helmet (10), said protector member (60) incorporating or comprising a substantially rigid protector element shaped to fit over at least a part of the exterior of the protective helmet (10), and having means for releasably retaining the protector member (60) on the helmet (10), the protector member (60), when fitted, being capable of absorbing impacts whereby to protect the shell of the helmet (10) from damage.
