PURPOSE: A method for preparing an aqueous emulsion polymer and a method for reducing the remaining ethylene-based unsaturated monomer content of the aqueous emulsion polymer by the redox reaction are provided to reduce the content of form aldehyde in the emulsion polymer. CONSTITUTION: The preparation method of an aqueous emulsion polymer comprises the steps of providing the free radical redox initiator system comprising at least one ethylene-based unsaturated monomer and a free radical redox reaction initiator comprising t-alkyl hydroperoxide, t-alkyl peroxide or t-alkyl perester wherein the t-alkyl group contains substantially at least 5 carbons, and a non-formaldehyde-forming reducing agent; and polymerizing some of the ethylene-based unsaturated monomer. Preferably the redox system comprises a redox reaction accelerating metal salt and a metal complexing agent; and the non-formaldehyde-forming reducing agent is selected from the group consisting of isoascorbic acid, sodium metabisulfite, sodium bisulfite, sodium dithionite and sodium 2-hydroxy-2-sulfinatoacetic acid.
