A catalyst for the isomerization of propadiene (PD) to methylacetylene (MA) comprises an alkaline earth oxide or lanthanum oxide, an MgO support impregnated with at least one alkali metal compound, alkaline earth metal compound or lanthanum metal compound and calcined at 200-800 deg C or a psi -Al2O3 support impregnated with compounds of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and/or La and calcined at 200-800 deg C. An Independent claim is included for a methylacetylene (MA) from a 3C cut from an ethylene plant whereby the 3C cut contains propane (PA), propene (PE), mainly propadiene (PD) and MA; PD is reacted to form MA in the liquid phase by catalytic isomerization; and the MA product is recovered in at least one separation stage, comprises isomerization in a multifunctional reactor in which the PD is reacted to form MA and separated from PA and PE.
