Production of an amorphous catalyst support with high reactivity is made by forming gels of aluminum (hydr)oxide and silicon (hydr)oxide, mixing, homogenizing and spray drying. Independent claims are included for: (1) a heterogeneous catalyst comprising a support as above, a group 3-8 transition metal compound and a group 3 or 4 organometallic compound; (2) preparation of the catalyst by reacting a support having a group 3 or 4 organometallic compound with a group 3-8 transition metal compound; and (3) preparation of polyolefins using the catalyst.
