An amorphous catalyst support with high reactivity has a physisorbed water content of at least 2.5 wt.%. Independent claims are included for: (1) a heterogeneous catalyst comprising a support as above, a group 3-8 transition metal compound and a group 3 or 4 organometallic compound; (2) preparation of the catalyst by reacting a support having a group 3 or 4 organometallic compound with a group 3-8 transition metal compound; and (3) the preparation of polyolefins using the catalyst.
