The safety valve for the circuit (2) leading air into a vehicle fuel tank is fixed on the tank upper wall (3). The valve comprises an enclosure (4) inside the tank upper wall. The upper part of the enclosure is connected through an orifice (7) to the air circuit. A float (5), carrying a needle (6), can slide vertically inside the enclosure such that in its top position the needle seals the orifice. To improve sealing, the orifice is provided with an elastomeric joint (8). The float is raised by a rise of liquid in the valve passing through a truncated dish (9) or, if the tank is inclined, by displacement of a ball (10) in the dish. The enclosure is extended in its lower part by a shaft (11) and in its upper part (4) has small lateral openings (12) enabling passage of vapour but preventing significant flow of liquid.
