The machine tool has a machine bed (1) with workpiece spindle support movable along a horizontal guide (19). The length of this guide is dependent on the number of tool aggregate holders (4) and the number of workpiece spindle supports (2) so that when fitting the machine with only one spindle support and only one aggregate holder the guide has a basic length which only then becomes longer when second aggregate and spindle supports are added. The workpiece spindle is preferably horizontal and can be loaded and unloaded by a loading arm (36).
