A method for the gas-phase polymerisation of 2-8C alk-1-enes at 40-150 deg C and 1-100 bar in a stirred powder bed using a suitable catalyst system involves polymerization in presence of a fluidized-bed classifier consisting of an open tube in the powder bed through which gas is passed upwards at such a rate that a fluidized bed is formed in the powder-filled tube. An Independent claim is also included for a device for the above process, comprising a stirred powder-bed reactor incorporating fluid-bed classifier(s) in the form of tube(s) open at the top and bottom and fitted with a gas inlet in the lower half of the tube.
