The source emits in the near infra red (NIR), particularly in the waveband 0.8-1.5 mu m. It is especially a rod-type halogen lamp. A current supply and control system are included. The reflector (113a, 113b) suits the form and number of sources. Reflector and optionally source, are forced-cooled (115). A casing (107), handle (101), switch and/or control component (103, 105) are included. Preferred features: Several sources are contained in a suitable reflector. The reflector is adjustable and/or interchangeable. An interchangeable aperture diaphragm defines the limits of the region irradiated, with largely uniform radiation flux density. The area irradiated is 0.5-200 cm<2>, preferably 2-100 cm<2>. The power is 2 kW using a 220 V mains connection, or 5 kW from a three-phase 380 V supply; optionally greater powers may be employed. The cooling system includes a blower behind the reflector. A system of cooling channels passing water and/or compressed air assist cooling. Measurement is provided for the treatment, e.g. of spacing and/or temperature. Sensor(s) are non-contact, especially an ultrasonic distance sensor and/or a pyrometer. They are located behind the reflector, which has a recess (309) to accommodate them. Controls are provided for power and temperature selection and/or measurement. Power control includes a regulator allowing temperature of treatment or intensity to be set. A display shows the operational state and/or a parameter of the treatment process, especially spacing to the object and/or temperature.
