An information providing system for providing content data of relatively large capacity to a portable information terminal quickly without using any radio signal, an information providing device, and information providing method are disclosed. An information distribution system comprises a portable information terminal that includes an infrared transmission/reception unit for transmitting/receiving data by means of an optical signal in a noncontact way and a storage unit where data to be transmitted and received data is stored and an information distribution device that includes an infrared transmission/reception unit for transmitting/receiving data to/from the infrared transmission/reception unit of the portable information terminal and a storage unit where the received content data received through a network is stored and provides content data in response to a request of the portable information terminal.
