To form two stitches from a single stitch, the old stitch is transferred from the needle to a transfer element. The needle then forms a new loop and takes it through the stitch that is being held on the transfer element. Optionally the stitch can also be transferred to another needle or another transfer element. An Independent claim is also included for a knitting machine fitted with transfer elements to perform the process. The process can be equally applied to flat bed and circular knitting machines and used with latch needles or compound needles.
