Sensors on the computer mouse (1) are used to detect the presence of a hand and the computer (PC) assigns one or more mouse button functions to one or more keys on the keyboard (6). Independent claims are also included for (a) a second computer operating method, in which the computer detects keyboard input and determines whether a hand is present on the mouse, and then decides either to accept regular keyboard input if no hand is on the mouse or to accept regular mouse input if no keyboard input is detected, (b) a computer mouse with sensors for detecting the presence of a hand, and (c) a computer with at least one keyboard and a mouse used to carry out either of these operating methods.
