PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a block copolymer, by which a desired block copolymer whose structure can easily be designed can efficiently be produced, even when monomers having mutually remarkably different structures are used as synthetic raw materials. SOLUTION: This method for producing the block copolymer comprises subjecting (A) a metathesis-polymerizable unsaturated monocyclic compound and (B) a metathesis-polymerizable unsaturated polycyclic compound to a metathesis polymerization reaction using (C) a metal carbene complex catalyst, and is characterized by mixing (initiating the reaction) (A) the monocyclic compound with (B) the whole amount of (C) the necessary metal carbene complex catalyst and then adding (reacting) (B) the polycyclic compound to the reaction system. Preferably, in the method for producing the block copolymer, after the reaction, a reaction terminator is further added to the polymerization reaction, and catalytically active sites originated from (C) the metal carbene complex catalyst bound to one end of the polymer and halogen atoms or the like coordinated on the central metal are removed, respectively.
