PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent hydrogen permeable material which less changes with lapse of time in spite of use in the presence of steam at an elevated temperature. SOLUTION: This hydrogen permeable material is formed by disposing a hydrogen permselective layer through which the hydrogen selectively permeates on the surface of a porous material having open pores. The hydrogen permselective layer consists of at least >=1 kind selected from aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide and silicon-zirconium multi component oxide and at least the surface of the hydrogen permselective layer contains >=1 kind selected from fluorine, titanium, chlorine, bromine, yttrium, indium, bismuth and cerium.
