PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert powder of sialon of a starting raw material to high pressure phase spinel type sialon with only once shock treatment without changing the composition. SOLUTION: The high pressure phase spinel type sialon is represented by the chemical formula: Si6-xAlxOxN8-x (0<x<=4.2). The high pressure phase spinel type sialon powder is manufactured by pressurizing instantaneously a press molding composed of a mixture of low pressure phaseβ-sialon having the composition expressed by the chemical formula: Si6-xAlxOxN8-x (0<x<=4.2), and copper powder by shock wave under >=15 GPa pressure for <=5 microsecond to phase- transfer the low pressure phaseβ-sialon to the high pressure phase spinel type sialon.
