PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binding unit of a binder, the holding or releasing operation of binding rods of which for inserting in the binding holes of a document can be performed smoothly and which is suitable for mass-production. SOLUTION: When a lock releasing piece 25 is depressed, locking bodies 16 are shifted so as to be apart from each other, resulting in releasing the engaging recessed parts 8 of side wall parts in order to make either entrance or exit of the binding rods possible. Elastic pawl pieces 17 engage with some parts of the engaging recessed parts 8, resulting in holding the locking bodies to their positions. On the other hand, under the state that the lock releasing piece is depressed, when an opening and closing plate 5 is stood up so as to press the binding rods 6 against the elastic pawl pieces 17, the engagements between the elastic pawl piece and the some part of the engaging recessed part is released, resulting in restoring the locking bodies 16 to their original positions through the elastic action of a spring 30. Then, the engaging pieces 18 of the locking bodies intervene in the opening side of the engaging recessed parts 8, resulting in gripping the tip parts of the binding rods 6.
