PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a raw wire for a solid wire by which the feedability of the solid wire itself for gas shielded arc welding can be improved. SOLUTION: This raw wire of a solid wire before drawing has a composition containing, by mass, 0.02 to 0.15% C, 0.1 to 1.0% Si and 0.5 to 2.0% Mn, and the balance Fe as an essential component. Provided that the average value of the ferrite grain size in the central part of the raw wire is defined as (a), the maximum value thereof as (a)max, and the minimum value thereof as (a)min, and the average value of the ferrite grain size in the surface layer part of the raw wire is defined as (b), the maximum value thereof as (b)max, and the minimum value thereof as (b)min, ((a)max-(a)min)/a<=0.10, and ((b) max-(b)min)/b<=0.10 are satisfied.
