PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid a driver from feeling a sense of incongruity or uncomfort by keeping an optimum follow-up vehicle-to-vehicle distance corresponding to traffic conditions during follow-up travel with an ACC system. SOLUTION: The ACC system capable of setting a reference follow-up vehicle-to-vehicle distance to be 'long', 'medium' and 'short' is used for discriminating the traffic jam conditions of a road detected by an article detector, namely, the number of vehicles in parallel, other than preceding vehicle, detected within a preset time), and changing the current reference follow-up vehicle-to- vehicle distance to be short if the road is jammed or changing the current reference follow-up vehicle-to-vehicle distance to be longer if the road is not jammed. Thus, the driver is prevented from feeling a sense of incongruity or uncomfort if his vehicle cannot follow the other vehicles in the traffic jam conditions or is interrupted by the other vehicles, and his vehicle is prevented from coming too close to the preceding vehicle in non-jammed conditions and the driver is avoided from feeling a sense of incongruity or discomfort.
