PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cargo transfer device having high storage space efficiency, permitting simple and efficient transfer operation and offering simple construction. SOLUTION: The cargo transfer device for transferring a container capable of storing cargoes to a storage section of a shelf and taking the container out of the storage section of the shelf comprises a string member 28 bridged between turning wheels 26, 27 and adapted to be driven to the direction of transfer of the cargoes and a pawl 20 connected to the string member 28 and adapted to be moved with the drive of the string member 28 for engaging an engagement portion of the container. The pawl 20 is moved in parallel when a connection 30 between the string member 28 and the pawl 20 exists between the turning wheels 26, 27, and the connection 30 is moved along the turning wheels 26, 27 when the connection 30 is located at the turning wheels 26, 27, whereby the pawl 20 is moved up or down for engagement/disengagement with/ from the container.
