mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: proposed rod designed for reciprocating hydraulic cylinders has inner space made in form of circle with cut off segments of different areas from top and bottom. Larger area segment is cut off from side of more compressed fibers. Outer shape of rod cross section is described by smooth convex curve and is similar to isosceles triangle with rounded off tops. Base of triangle is arranged at side of more compressed fibers, and contour of section is described by function y(x) = ±b[(x/a)0,5-(x/a)]0,5 where a and b are maximum sizes of rod cross section along axis of symmetry and square to this axis, respectively.
