The transmission system between the engine output shaft of a motor vehicle and an electric machine capable functioning as a motor or as a generator incorporates at least two transmission stages which are dependent on the mode of operation of the electric machine. The transmission stages are switchable by means of at least one belt freewheeling unit which is firmly joined to a first component, and has a friction surface which is engageable with a friction surface of a rotatable second component.
