PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device that can effectively eliminate unwanted lights on a displayed image so as to enhance uniformized lighting up to an image display element, thereby preventing effectively the occurrence of deteriorated contrast of the image and of flairs and ghosts, and allowing a viewer to able to view a proper image. SOLUTION: The image display device is configured with a light source 5, that emits an illuminating light, the image display element 6 that reflects an incident light to display an image, a lighting optical element 2 that reflects the lighting light from the light source toward the image display element and transmits through the image light from the image display element, an observation optical element 1 that leads the image light transmitted through the lighting optical element to eyes of a viewer, and a shade member 7 that shades at least one of unwanted lights that are contained in the lighting light from the light source and led to an area at the outside of a valid image display area of the image display element and an unwanted light that is included in the image light from the image display element and resident in an area other than an effective observation area.
