PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the linear approximation long in processing time to be carried out relating to all curve segments. SOLUTION: The character data conversion method of indicating the plural curve portions of the contour lines of the characters indicated by outline font data with the straight lines approximating each of the curve segments respectively regulating these portions to the curve segments forming the contour lines of the characters by using the straight lines and forming the bit map data indicating characters in accordance with the contour lines includes a step of forming elementary piece approximation data indicating the straight lines for approximating the plural curve segments analogous with each other among the plural curve segments to the elementary pieces from the elementary piece data indicating the representative elementary pieces and a second step of indicating each of the plural curve segments analogous with each other by the straight lines indicated by the elementary piece approximation data.
