A particulate filter 24 carrying the NO absorbent is disposed in an engine exhaust passage, and when SOX is to be emitted from the NOX absorbent and if there is enough electric energy to be stored in a battery 41, the first combustion is executed, even when the second combustion is to be performed, so that the lowering of the output torque of the engine is compensated by the output torque of an electric motor 37 to make the air-fuel ratio rich.
