PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image-processing unit equipped with a scanner, that controls its traveling body to move in a short distance for homing of itself at return from a shutdown (interruption of power supply, hereinafter to be called 'SD') and for reading of a reference board, so as to reduce the time to the standby state. SOLUTION: The carriage of the image scanner is stopped in a region of the reference board, in the case of shifting to the SD. Figure shows an example of the operation at return from the SD, and at start of the operation, the carriage keeps its position in a state of the shift to the SD. Since a read level can automatically be adjusted immediately after the start of the returning from the state of the SD, the carriage is moved to a standby position, after waiting its completion of the adjustment. The checking of the SD position, caused when the output of a home position sensor turns effective on its way, is discriminated as being proper, and the origin detection (homing) is performed at that time. The carriage is shifted to the standby position, without the need for reading the reference board having conventionally been required, when the SD position is the standby position.
